CIRC Holds 2009 Statewide Assembly in Grand Junction
Hundreds of immigrant and native-born community members will unite behind need for reforms
Grand Junction, CO- This
weekend, the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC) will convene
over 60 organizations from throughout the state to strategize and build
momentum towards comprehensive immigration reform and prepare for the
2010 state legislative session. Those attending include grassroots
immigrant leaders, faith leaders, educators, students, labor and
community organizers, service providers, and other allies.
"We decided to host the CIRC Assembly in Grand Junction as a tribute to
the social, environmental and economic significance of the Western
Slope and the long-standing contributions of immigrants in the region,"
noted Ricardo Perez, leader with the Hispanic Affairs Project in
Montrose and a board member with CIRC.
CIRC's membership organizes in 15 different Western Slope communities,
and in 2009, the coalition expanded to seven ski-industry mountain
towns, from Dillon to Telluride.
"Immigrants and receiving communities will unite at the Assembly behind
a common goal for 2010: to achieve immigration policies that are
workable and uphold our nation's values of economic opportunity, family
unity and strength in diversity," noted Gina Millán, CIRC's membership
coordinator and organizer of this year's event.
CIRC holds an annual assembly to set the coalition's policy agenda,
elect leadership and provide training to members. To learn more, visit:
