Why Does Rep. Coffman Support Maintaining a Broken Immigration System?
Colorado - This week, Rep. Coffman (R-CO) signed on as a
co-sponsor of the BRIDGE (Bipartisan Reform of Immigration through Defining
Good Enforcement) resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Colorado
Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC) adamantly opposes BRIDGE because it offers no
sensible solution to a broken immigration system. The following is a statement
from Julien Ross, Executive Director of CIRC:
"The BRIDGE resolution means more of the same - more pain for American
workers, more costs to taxpayers, more burdens for honest employers, and more
difficulty ensuring the rule of law. It maintains the status quo while
proposing impractical and expensive deportation schemes.
"We can't build a strong economy without fixing our broken immigration
system, yet the BRIDGE resolution asks us to do just this. Studies show that
immigration reform will add $1.5 trillion to the U.S. economy, help drive up
wages for all workers, and support nearly a million jobs.
Instead of the BRIDGE resolution, we need a common sense, lasting fix to the
immigration system. Comprehensive immigration reform is this fix. It will
better protect all American workers, keep families together, and promote our
national security while ensuring that we stay true to our values as a nation of
immigrants."

The Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC) is a statewide membership-based
coalition of immigrant, faith, labor, youth, and ally organizations founded in
2002 to defend and advance justice for all immigrants and refugees in Colorado.
High profile artists like Mr. de La Rocha have come out strongly against the criminalization of immigrant communities, and we hope that their words will have an effect on the politicians looking to use immigration as a wedge issue this election season
